Mihailo Trandafilovski-work in progress
I am fascinated by mark making. As an artist myself, my approach to the violin, to articulation, to colour, has and is profoundly affected by marks on paper and canvas, be they scores, drawings, letters or painting. I believe that so much can be inferred about a composer’s intentions, ideas, and psyche from the way they work, physically, with pencil, pen, paper and eraser. This was reawakened yesterday when Mihailo sent me two pages from the quintet which he is writing for the virtuoso clarinetist, Roger Heaton. I don’t want to suggest anything, but present one of them, alongside his music-see for yourself!

This extraordinary piece was written for the project ‘South London Walks’ which Mihailo curated at the South London Gallery in 2010. He has been very open about the benefits of composing from ‘within the ensemble’-as a composer who plays as part of an established quartet, he is joining a small, but elite group- Josef Suk, Paul Hindemith, Mozart, Haydn, Dittersdorf, Vanhal, Mayseder…
